ADDITIONAL INFO:
Based upon a design by Sir Donald C. Bailey during the Second World War, this type of bridge is constructed of standardized, pre-fabricated parts which may be easily transported and assembled on site. It consists of truss panels, pins and connectors which may be lifted and assembled using available manpower and simple tools.

Also known as the panel bridge, it was very important in replacing war-damaged bridges: creating temporary or permanent crossings. Various lengths of span and load capacities could be constructed by using different combinations of the standard components.

Some of the floor beams of this bridge are marked "ACROW 804/88 NEW YORK." The truss panels have part numbers embossed on them. A skew in the deck is achieved by an additional short panel on one end.

To my knowledge, this is one of only two bridges of this type in Allegheny County. (The other carries Grant Av over Pine Creek in Etna.) This bridge may be endangered by the planned extension of the Mon-Fayette Expressway through this valley to connect to the Penn-Lincoln Parkway near Monroeville.
