ADDITIONAL INFO:
The tunnel which connects the Steel Plaza Station to the Panhandle Bridge over the Monongahela River was built in 1863 for the Pittsburgh & Steubenville Extension RR, later the Panhandle Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Part of the tunnel was removed for the subway station; other sections were refurbished.

The downtown portion of the subway was opened in July 1985. The full system (Stage I) was operational in 1987 with the opening of the Beechview line.
